My neighbors have been wanting a new fence, something we’ve been kicking around for a year or so. They eventually proposed a timeline. I explained that the money was not there for me, and I’d rather do it myself and split materials. Well, he was SO happy with the suggestion, he offered to pay for *all* the materials. Oh crap, bluff called and improved.

Kinja'd!!!

I took today off (requested it a while ago, perfect timing because I’m burnt out) and began removal of the old fence.

Before (old photo):

After:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Now trying to find lumber... Every place is picked clean. In the meantime we’ll put up the hangers and 2x4s... About 130 pickets short

Kinja'd!!!

Lots of compliments on the pickup at Dunn Lumber, as usual.

What was wrong with the existing fence? I’d be a horrific single freestanding house owner.

your “old” fence looks about 3 times as good as my “new” fence.... I’m a bad neighbor...

I think his wife wanted a new fence, and I think he's married to his wife.

Parts of the fence at my last home was literally held together with wire and zip ties. I'm not footing bills so I don't care about a little light labor.

So we’re the trees holding up your fence too? That’s what was going on at my place. I just  replaced  140' of fence at my house. Staining was more trouble than expected.

No but we were approaching that point. Two of the posts were rotting and just sitting atop soil.

There was a time when Toyota knew how to make a  truck that appealed to me. Reliable, fuel efficient, re gular cab, long bed and manual transmission. Heck, you could even get it as a 3/4 and one ton. Why can’t we have nice things anymore?

This is a perfect example of why you should keep the pickup. Hauling all that in a 4-Runner would suck.

But it would NOT suck in a longbed Tundra

Longboi doing work! Awesome!

My neighbor decided to redo his deck recently and ran into the same issue, all the lumber places are picked clean.

May I conclude from this post that you have a better relationship with the tools of a carpenter than with the tools of an automobile mechanic?

If I can't fix a car with a 10mm socket, then I can't fix it.

Your definition of “light labor” and mine are wildly different.

Pssshhh. That’s easy peasy in the 4Runner!

That’s a very common size, so you’re off to a good start. I find the 13mm to also be quite useful. And vice grips. You’re set.

One of the reasons I went with the 4Runner over a Durango was that the rear opening exceeds four feet in width. I’ve had 4x8 sheets of project/white board in the 4Runner (solid plywood that isn’t as “floppy”, I’d have to leave the hatch open. 2x4s I can either move the passenger seat a little forward and close the hatch, or roll the rear glass down and have them stick out a foot. Heck, I was able to bring home two 9x12’ rugs with the hatch closed.

Long is easy...bulky is harder in the 4Runner.

That’s how it goes with SUVs. Lo ng is definitely easy in them. My truck sucks at hauling long stuff. My dad is actually thinking of selling his truck and getting a Tahoe. If he does, I’m taking his fancy aluminum track-rack for those times.

Try hauling that stack of fence sections in an SUV though, and it'll suck.

Yes, top picture would suck. Bottom picture is the easy one! At least a Uhaul utility trailer is 5 minutes and $20 away!

There are still days I would like a pickup, though. I’m about 50.1% SUV and 49.9% pickup, but that percentage fluctuates a little every day.

Yep.

I don't think I'll ever not have a pickup, but I'd love to add a Tahoe or Suburban to my fleet.
